What Valant actually offers for client communication, why MYIO and outbound SMS reminders do not cover two-way texting, and how to add compliant messaging clients reply to over SMS.
Get started for freeSchedule a demo →Valant offers two separate communication features: outbound-only SMS appointment reminders and secure messaging through the MYIO patient portal. The SMS reminders are automated and one-way — clients cannot reply to them with a text. MYIO portal messaging requires clients to download the MYIO app to read and respond. There is no native two-way SMS, no group threads, and no dedicated practice number for texting.

Valant's outbound SMS appointment reminders send automated text notifications about upcoming appointments. These are one-way. Clients receive the reminder but cannot reply with a text message to reschedule or ask a question.
MYIO is Valant's patient engagement portal. It handles intake forms, appointment scheduling, and secure messaging. Clients download the MYIO app to access messages. For structured clinical communication where clients are willing to use the app, MYIO works.
The SMS reminders are outbound only — not conversational. MYIO requires an app download, which many clients will not do for a two-sentence message. There are no group threads. There is no dedicated practice number clients can text directly.
Mental health practices need quick, informal communication channels that clients actually use. When the compliant options require an app download or are one-way, clinicians default to personal phones. See HIPAA texting for mental health for why that matters.
Valant provides both SMS (one-way) and portal messaging (app-required), but neither covers the conversational texting gap. A between-session check-in, a follow-up question, a scheduling change — these need to reach clients where they already are: their phone, over SMS, with no app.
A texting tool that works alongside Valant should deliver two-way messages over SMS — no app required on the client side. It should offer a dedicated work number, after-hours auto-reply, and a signed BAA independent of the EHR.
BloomText gives mental health practices a dedicated number for client texting. Clients receive secure links over SMS and reply from their phone — no MYIO download, no portal login. Valant stays the clinical record and documentation platform. BloomText handles the conversational texting that Valant's one-way SMS and app-based portal do not cover.
Every plan includes a signed BAA, including the free plan. See pricing for current plans.
