What TherapyNotes TherapyPortal actually offers for client messaging, why the login requirement creates friction, and how to add SMS-based texting clients reply to from their phone.

Messages are organized by topic. It is not SMS — there is no way for clients to reply from their phone without logging into the portal. There are no group threads and no dedicated practice number for texting.

TherapyNotes includes secure messaging through TherapyPortal. Clinicians create message topics and exchange messages with individual clients. Clients log in with their email, date of birth, and a password. Messages are organized by topic within the portal.
For ongoing clinical communication where the client regularly checks the portal, this works. For a quick between-session check-in or a time-sensitive scheduling update, the three-step login is a barrier.
TherapyPortal requires email, DOB, and a password to log in. That is more friction than most clients will tolerate for a two-sentence message. The messaging is one-to-one only — no group threads. And it is not SMS. There is no dedicated practice number clients can text.
TherapyNotes is independently owned and focused on the clinical-documentation workflow. Messaging is a secondary feature inside the portal, not a standalone communication tool. See HIPAA texting for mental health for what a dedicated texting solution requires.
The gap between what TherapyPortal offers and what clinicians need for quick client communication leads to the same pattern: the clinician texts from a personal phone. The portal message might exist for compliance, but the actual communication happens outside it.
A texting tool that works alongside TherapyNotes should deliver messages over SMS. Clients should reply from their phone without logging into anything. The clinician needs a dedicated work number. A signed BAA should cover the texting platform independently.
BloomText gives mental health practices a dedicated number for client texting. Clients receive secure links over SMS and reply from their phone. TherapyNotes stays the clinical record and documentation platform. BloomText handles the communication that TherapyPortal does not reach.
Every plan includes a signed BAA, including the free plan. See pricing for current plans.
