The short answer

Motivity offers two-way caregiver portal messaging, which is more interactive than most ABA platforms. Caregivers can send and receive messages through the portal or app. However, the communication requires the caregiver to be logged into the portal — it is not SMS. Parents who do not check the portal regularly miss messages. Group threads with multiple staff and a parent are not confirmed as a native feature.

What Motivity actually offers

Motivity includes a caregiver portal with two-way messaging. This is more capable than the one-directional notifications in CentralReach or the one-way content delivery in RethinkBH's ParentHub. Caregivers can respond to messages, not just read them.

The limitation is the delivery channel. Messages live inside the portal. Parents need to be logged in to see them. For parents who check the portal regularly, this works. For the majority who do not, messages go unseen.

Where the portal requirement creates friction

A BCBA needs to tell a parent that tomorrow's session time changed. Sending that through the portal means the parent sees it whenever they next log in — which might be tonight, tomorrow morning, or never. Sending it as a text means the parent sees it in minutes.

Portal messaging also does not offer group threads where a BCBA, supervisor, and parent share one conversation. And it does not give the practice a dedicated number parents can text directly. See the HIPAA texting guide for ABA therapy for what compliant parent communication requires.

Why this matters for ABA practices

When the portal is the only compliant channel but parents do not check it, staff send the message through the portal and then text the parent from a personal phone to make sure they saw it. The portal message exists for compliance. The personal text exists for communication. Neither solves both problems.

What to look for in a complement

A texting tool that works alongside Motivity should deliver messages over SMS so parents see them immediately. Group conversations should include the BCBA, supervisor, and parent. The practice should own every conversation. A signed BAA should cover the texting platform independently.

How BloomText works alongside Motivity

BloomText gives ABA practices a dedicated number for parent texting. Parents receive secure links over SMS and reply from their phone — no portal login, no app download. Motivity stays the clinical platform. BloomText handles the communication that needs to reach parents immediately.

Every plan includes a signed BAA, including the free plan. See pricing for current plans.
