What CentralReach actually offers for parent communication, where it stops, and how to add HIPAA-compliant two-way texting that parents reply to over SMS.
Get started for freeSchedule a demo →CentralReach offers portal-based messaging through its parent portal and one-directional notifications, but it does not offer two-way SMS texting. Parents must log into the portal to read and respond to messages. There is no native way to send a text that a parent receives on their phone and replies to over SMS. CentralReach also does not support group threads where multiple staff and a parent share a single conversation.

CentralReach includes a parent portal where practices can send messages to families. Parents receive email notifications prompting them to log in and view the message. The portal also supports one-directional notifications for scheduling and session updates.
This works for structured updates like session notes and billing documents. It does not work for the fast, informal communication that ABA therapy runs on — a BCBA texting a parent that a session is running late, an RBT confirming a schedule change, a supervisor coordinating pickup.
The portal login requirement is the primary barrier. Parents managing multiple children in therapy, school schedules, and work do not log into a portal to read a two-sentence update. The notification goes to email, which is slower than SMS and easier to miss.
CentralReach does not offer two-way SMS. There is no way for a parent to reply with a quick text from their phone. There are no group threads where a BCBA, supervisor, and parent share a conversation. And there is no way for the practice to text from a dedicated work number that parents recognize. See the HIPAA texting guide for ABA therapy for what compliant parent communication requires.
When the compliant channel is too slow, staff default to personal phones. A BCBA texts a parent from their personal number. The conversation is not auditable, not owned by the practice, and leaves with the BCBA if they move on. The parent portal exists, but the actual communication happens outside it.
A texting tool that works alongside CentralReach should give the practice a dedicated number parents text over SMS. Parents should be able to reply without downloading an app or logging into anything. Group conversations should let a BCBA, supervisor, and parent share a single thread. And a signed BAA should cover the texting platform separately from the EHR.
BloomText gives ABA practices a dedicated number for parent texting. Parents receive secure links over SMS and reply from their phone — no app, no portal, no account creation. BCBAs and supervisors create group conversations with parents so everyone has visibility into the exchange.
CentralReach stays the clinical record. BloomText handles the fast, informal texting that the portal cannot. Conversations are owned by the practice, not individual staff. When a BCBA transitions off a case, the parent thread stays.
Every plan includes a signed BAA, including the free plan. Staff seats start at $14.50/month. See pricing for current plans.
