Search your messages

Find a chat, message or file across your inbox, or search inside one conversation and jump straight to the message you need.

Who can do this: Everyone · Web and desktop

Search helps you find what a family told you or a file they sent, without scrolling through months of messages. You can search every chat you can see, or just one conversation.

Before you start

  • Search covers the chats you are in and the chats of teams you belong to.
  • Depending on your plan, search covers the last 2 weeks or all of your history. See pricing.

Search all your chats

  1. Click Search at the top of the chat list.
  2. In Search chats, people, messages, files…, type a name, a phone number or a keyword, for example "consent form".
  3. Pick a tab to narrow the results: All, Chats, Messages or Files.
  4. Scan the results. Each one shows the chat, the message and when it was sent.
  5. Click a result to open the chat at that message.

The date pill next to the tabs shows how far back you're searching: All time or Last 2 weeks. If your plan covers the last 2 weeks, All time shows Unavailable. Press Esc to close the search window.

Search inside one conversation

  1. Open the chat you want to search.
  2. Click the magnifier (Search this conversation) in the chat header.
  3. Type a word the family used, for example "consent". Results appear as you type.
  4. Read the matches. Each one shows who sent it, the date, and the message with your word highlighted.
  5. Click a match. The thread jumps to that message.
  6. Press Esc to close the search and go back to the thread.

Good to know

  • If a search inside a conversation shows Search is temporarily unavailable, click Retry.
  • A message in a chat you aren't part of won't appear in your results. Ask a teammate on that team to search for it.
