Reply to, react to and copy messages

Answer one message with a quote, add a quick emoji reaction, pick up an unsent draft, or copy a message's exact text.

Who can do this: Everyone · Web, desktop, iPhone and Android

In a busy chat, a quote reply ties your answer to the exact message it answers, so nobody mixes up which question you meant. You can also react with an emoji when a message only needs a nod, come back to a message you started typing, and copy a message's text to paste somewhere else.

Before you start

  • These actions work on messages in any chat you are part of.
  • Recalled messages show no actions.

Reply to a message

  1. In the Inbox, click the chat with the message you want to answer.
  2. Point at the message, for example a parent asking to move Thursday's visit.
  3. Click the three dots (Message actions) next to it.
  4. Click Reply. The same menu has other actions too, such as Copy message, Translate and Copy link.
  5. Check the strip above the message box. It says Replying to, then the person's name and their message.
  6. Type your answer in the Type your message... box.
  7. Press Send, the paper-plane button.

Your reply shows a quote of the message it answers. To drop the quote before you send, click the ✕ at the end of the Replying to strip.

React with an emoji

  1. In the Inbox, click the chat with the message.
  2. Point at the message.
  3. Click the smiley with a plus (Add reaction) next to it.
  4. Pick a quick reaction, such as 👍. Click + to choose any other emoji.

The reaction shows under the message with a count. Point at a reaction to see who added it. To take your reaction back, click it again.

Pick up an unsent draft

If you get pulled away while typing, you can leave the chat and finish later.

  1. Start typing in the Type your message... box.
  2. Click another chat. You don't need to send or delete anything first.
  3. In the Inbox list, the chat you left now shows Draft: with your unsent words.
  4. When you are ready, click that chat again. Your words are still in the message box.
  5. Finish the message and press Send.

Copy a message's text

  1. In the Inbox, click the chat with the message you need.
  2. Point at the message and click the three dots (Message actions).
  3. Click Copy message.
  4. Paste the text where you need it, such as a note or a ticket.

Only the words are copied, without the sender's name or the time. Copy link sits next to it and copies a link to the message instead of its text.

On a phone

In the iPhone and Android apps, press and hold a message to open Message Options. From there you can:

  • Tap an emoji at the top to react.
  • Tap Reply to quote the message.
  • Tap Copy message text to copy the words.

Good to know

  • On a computer, a chat with new unread messages shows the latest message in the Inbox list instead of Draft:. Your draft is still saved, so open the chat to finish it.
  • Copy message copies text. For a photo or file, open it instead. See Send, open and download files and photos.
