ABA therapy is not daycare
Brightwheel is a childcare management platform built for preschools and daycares. It handles attendance, daily reports, billing, and parent check-in. Many ABA clinics share a physical resemblance with childcare centers: young children, structured schedules, parent drop-off and pick-up. But the similarity ends at the front door. ABA therapy is a prescribed medical treatment. The communication between your practice and parents about diagnoses, treatment goals, session data, and behavioral assessments is protected health information. Brightwheel was not designed for this and says so explicitly.
Brightwheel's own disclaimer tells the story
Brightwheel's security FAQ states: "Although brightwheel meets many of the requirements of HIPAA, brightwheel does not certify HIPAA compliance for its platform." They also claim that "HIPAA regulations do not apply to the type of information stored and collected in brightwheel." This is true for daycare enrollment forms. It is not true for ABA therapy communication. When your staff messages a parent about their child's treatment progress, that message contains PHI, and Brightwheel is not a compliant channel for it.
Notification records your compliance team can verify
ABA regulatory compliance often requires documented proof that parents were notified of treatment changes. Brightwheel daily reports are designed for daycare activities: meals, naps, diaper changes. They are not designed to document healthcare notifications. BloomText read receipts create a verifiable record that a parent saw your message about a session cancellation, treatment plan update, or consent requirement. Your compliance team can export the full audit trail.
